Everything was too loud. From the bass reverberating in her chest to the cheers of those rowdy partygoers around her. What was she thinking? Wandering into a place like this. The club was no place for a girl who loved the countryside. Yet, something was keeping her here.
Perhaps it was the happiness that seemed to ooze from those in the environs. Or perhaps it was drunkenness. Either way, they still seemed happy. Happy-drunk. Whatever. Bella rolled her eyes and ambled up to the counter, climbing onto the stool. A guy nearby clearly had his eyes on her, but she just scoffed and turned the other way. Playing hard to get? No, just not in the mood to be taken. “What would it be?” the handsome bartender inquired, winking at her. Bella thought about it. But with not much prior experience with alcohol, she didn’t have a clue. She withdrew a cig and a lighter from her bag, taking her slow time to light it before she replied. “Surprise me.” She smirked and took a long drag on her cigarette. A few minutes later, she had a martini in front of her. She took a sip and grinned. Perhaps it wasn’t so bad here after all.

There was a woodpecker hammering at her head. Surely. Bella woke up with a groan, her hand automatically moving to her pounding head. Her throat was parched, her eyes heavy from the lack of sleep. She rubbed her eyes in vain, hoping the bleariness would disappear, but her vision seemed to take an eternity to clear.
Where was she? With one glance around, her environment became clear. She was in her living room, her upper body draped over the seat of the couch, her lower body still on the ground. She struggled to her knees, rubbing at her sore hip. Somehow the happenings of the night before were hazy in her mind. There was definitely some drinking, or a lot of drinking… some dancing, some shameless flirting. Before she could think any further, nausea rose up, sending her bounding towards the bathroom. It wasn’t very long before last night’s cocktails made a reappearance. As she took a long shower, her memory slowly returned. Last night, someone had managed to call a cab to get her home. Her landlady, a kind woman, had deemed her a ‘rookie’ and chuckled at how she’d obviously been unable to hold her liquor. Yet, she’d helped her up to her apartment. A rookie? Bella cringed, thinking how she must have embarrassed herself, being such a drunken mess. Rolling her eyes she climbed into bed and pulled the covers over herself. The world would have to do without her today. Bella stared across the vast land, at utter emptiness. At a place she once felt at peace. Now, the emptiness threatened to swallow her whole. She stripped off her shoes and dropped her backpack in the grass, her eyes focused on the horizon. There was nothing more she wanted than to feel a sense of purpose, but she had yet to find it.
The fighting tournaments had given her a temporary goal, something to aim towards. Yet now, as they ended, she was right back where she started. She closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of the grass beneath her bare feet, relishing in the cool breeze that blew through her curls, and the soothing sounds of the animals hiding from plain sight. She would gather herbs until the sun set, and perhaps she would brew some remedies to sell. Or something like that. With a sigh, she leaned close to part the bushes, stepping into the clearing to get started on her search. If only she could find her purpose here. Bella gazed at her reflection in the mirror a while longer. She had her share of bruises now. In just one week, it seemed like she'd been knocked to the ground more than she had in her entire life. He muscles ached, her bones felt bruised, and her face felt too sore to even grimace. Yet, all she could think was: "I'll be better next time."
It had been an amazing experience, being in New York and being part of the tournaments. Outside of the tournaments itself, she'd also had quite an amazing experience. She had to focus on not smiling as the memory returned to her mind. His lips against hers, their bodies pressed close... She sighed and walked away from the mirror. Now it was time to get back to reality. She was still awaiting the scores, but she knew that she hadn't made it into the next rounds. She simply wasn't at the level as the others were... yet. But she'd be back... And she'd show them all... For now, she was going to be a "normal" person and spend some time with others her age. She picked up her phone to message Isa, telling her the'see each other soon again. |
