about shinji
Place of Birth: Fukuoka, Japan |
Shinji's PersonalityShinji is a rather insecure person. This is mainly caused by certain events in his past, combined with a lack of affection from his father. This lack of affection also made Shinji rebel against his father at times. But underneath all of that hides a friendly person, longing to be accepted by someone.
Shinji's BackgroundShinji was born out of the union between Hanzo and Ryuko. His parents, coming from two completely different environments, got married. The different backgrounds between his parents had made it hard for them, but after the marriage they started trying to conceive.
When they managed to conceive, the both of them talked about their unborn child all the time. At some point, Ryuko made the remark this this child already owned a big chunk of her heart. Hanzo only replied to that by saying that if they had a boy, his name would be Shinji, which could be translated as true ruler. |
After his birth, Shinji and his parents lived in Fukuoka for the first three years of his life. Hanzo was now working his way up in his father's automotive company. After those years, Hanzo got transferred to the Canadian branch of the company. Thus the family moved to Toronto, Canada.
While he was in Canada, Shinji only learned how to speak English. His father was very firm when it came to that, and even made the family speak English while they were at home. He said this would allow them to better integrate in the community. To further stress this community integration, Shinji went to school in public schools, something that wiped out whatever remained of his Japanese accent, and the lack of practice in the Japanese language made it as good as non-existent.
In school, Shinji was picked on for his looks. He was unlike the Chinese or Korean kids in his class, and everyone else was looking even more different from him. This sometimes made him feel lonely, a feeling that was increased because he often not saw his father. This and his heritage made Shinji grow a profound interest in Japanese culture, and even more in video games. He often got punished at school because he was playing videogames on one of his many systems during class.
When Shinji was 10 years of age, disaster struck. While his mother was cooking, at this time Shinji was still at school, a fire broke out. Despite the fire alarm, Ryuko tried to extinguish the flames by herself, and in the end died of severe burn wounds as her clothes had caught fire in the process.
Her death shook up young Shinji’s life. Suddenly, he was left at home with a nanny most of the time, and when his father was home, Shinji could see he was no longer the same. Hanzo slept on the couch often, and the loss of his wife had led him to try cocaine, something he eventually became addicted to. This led to Shinji becoming rather independent from a young age, although Shinji now used his father’s money to buy himself all the new gaming consoles and videogames without his father’s knowledge.
It took four years before Shinji’s father got married again. He married an American woman, Morgan, more for her looks than her brain, who brought with her two children. These children, 15 and 16 year old boys, now picked on Shinji at home. He was constantly belittled for his looks, and made feel less by these boys who tried to take all of his belongings. Shinji tried to ignore them, and he withdrew himself more in his research about Japan, making a promise to himself he would return to his country of origin once he turns 16.
When he did turn 16, he started working at his father's office. He worked his way up through the ranks, until he saw a notice that there was a new position being opened at the Tokyo office of the company. He went on to talk to his father about this open position, and after some discussion he was put in for a transfer to Tokyo.
