About Athena
Date of Birth: Day 14, Year 85 |
Athena's PersonalityAthena is a bubbly, outgoing and hyperactive child. She enjoys reading, colouring and sports. She mostly likes tennis because that's what her mother excelled at.
Athena's BackgroundAthena was conceived on Day of the Dead, just before her father, Elias Jeremy Barthel, left for India for the first time to do archeological work. While working there, Eli found an interest in helping out orphaned kids. Eli quickly became friends with the two female workers at the orphanage, Rupal and Ziya. The latter of these gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Mishaye while on a walk with Eli.
In the meanwhile, in London, Athena's mother, Aelin Sunshine Carmichael, was experiencing the early symptoms of a pregnancy. Aelin's friend, Amelia, tried to convince her of this, but Aelin was reluctant to believe that she actually was pregnant. After all, she had been struggling from hormonal dysfunction, which forced her to take medication if she even wanted to think about ever conceiving. It wasn't until Aelin was admitted into the hospital shortly after Mishaye's birth that the truth struck them both. The excessive bleeding and abdominal pains Aelin had been suffering from were consistent with the signs of a miscarriage. The people at the hospital took action and tried to save Aelin and the baby, which they succeeded in. As Eli arrived in London, not knowing what had happened to his wife, he rushed to the hospital, only to be taken in surprise by the fetal monitor. |
Athena's parents, just dating at that time, decided to spend the time remaining in the pregnancy together in London, where they quickly got engaged. They spent all of their time together, slowly getting accustomed to the ideas of married life and the baby being in their midst. When they finally were able to see the baby on an ultrasound, Aelin dotingly called her their "little warrior". This nickname was easily found, seeing the unborn child had gone through things that would make it impossible for other fetuses to be carried to term. Eli liked this, and he quickly picked up this nickname. When Aelin was halfway through her pregnancy, Eli and her learned the gender of their child was female. It was strange, as they had always thought the little warrior was a boy. Eli playfully changed the nickname to "warrior princess" after that.
Eventually, despite being overdue, Aelin went into labour naturally. Eli and her spent a long night in the hospital, waiting for the child to come out. By this time, they had already agreed on the name Athena Primrose Barthel, inspired by the mythological warrior/intellectual goddess because that was close to Eli's field of interest and a flower that Aelin liked, being a nature lover. Despite the horrors Eli and Aelin had to endure during the seemingly never-ending childbirth, eventually the girl was born healthy, much to her parents' relief.
When Athena was one year old, she gained a sister. Her parents adopted her dad's Kobedaughter, Mishaye, from India after Mishaye's mother died. It took a while for Athena to get used to having a sister, but soon they became friends. She found that the girl was fun to play with, even when she wasn't that talkative at first. But over time, she couldn't imagine being apart from Mishaye, and they became the best of friends.
Several months after each other, in the end of year 89 and the beginning of year 90, Athena's family was struck by a double horror. First Athena's dad got killed in a mugging in India. This left Athena confused, wondering why her daddy wasn't there any more. But her mummy Aelin explained to her in children's words that her daddy wasn't coming back. A little after, her mother got killed in a hit-and-run. After that, Athena was left in the care of her aunts, uncles and grandparents on her father's side. After some time with them, Athena learned that she would be moving to South Africa with her aunty Belie. Her aunty now would be her new mummy. The only sad thing about that was that she wouldn't be with Mishaye any more.
The years after her adoption, Athena lived in South Africa. She got to know her cousins, Eryn and Mya. She spent time learning new things that came in handy in South Africa once she got over the loss of her parents a bit more.
