Bella awoke and as usual, went around the apartment, feeding her pets. Between the two puppies Wesley and Ramsey, her cat Bowtie, her parrot Rainbow and of course old Frankie the rabbit, the small apartment was getting crowded. Frankie usually was awake, waiting for his food by the time Bella woke, but this time, he remained in the corner of his hutch. Unmoving.
Bella tapped the wire of the hutch a a few times, but it yielded no response from the grey rabbit. She unlocked the caged and reached in, only to discover that Franke had gone cold. Dead cold. Bella pouted. "Oh Frankie," she sighed. She'd found the rabbit near Frank's Monolith in Stockholm five years ago. Almost exactly five years ago. Bella pouted more. He was a good rabbit, she thought...

Bella and Belie stood outside of a creepy old house, staring at it with matching expressions. "Are you...sure about his?" Belie asked after a while.
"No," Bella honestly replied. Shelooked down at the paper in her hand--the psychic's phone number and address that the creepy guy in Glastonbury had given her. must be crazy to go along with this, Bella thought to herself. She sighed and then nudged Belie. "Let's go." Belie looked uncertain but followed Bella into the eerie house. As a voice hissed something unintelligible, Bella spun around, her fists raised, prepared to defend herself. She raised her eyebrow and slowly lowered her hands as she noticed the elderly woman standing before her, wisps of grey hair partially covering her face. "Uh, hi," said Bella. The woman pointed to a door and then pointed to Bella. "Only me?" Bella asked. The psychic nodded. "Bella," Belie whispered, looking a tad frightened. "Shh," said Bella. "I can defend myself. You... wait in the RV. Trust me." Belie nodded and gave the elderly woman a strange look before leaving the house. Bela made sure she was safely outside and then proceeded through the door. The walk, through the dark hallway, seemed to last forever until at last Bella arrived in a dark room with a chair. "Sit," the psychic told her. "Uh... okay." Bella hesitantly sat down, the metal of the chair chilling her to the bone. There was a scratching noise as the psychic dragged another chair close to Bella's. "So, uhm, I was told to visit you?" The psychic nodded and began rambling. No matter how many times Bella asked her to repeat herself, she continued incoherently. After what felt like an hour, the woman rambled a few more unknown words and then passed out. "Oh...kay..." Bella raised an eyebrow again and after failing to rouse the woman, she quickly left the eerie house. "Wait right here," Bella said as they parked in the lot of an apartment complex. Belie cast her a questioning look before Bella ran out of the mobile home and headed for the apartment. Once inside, she withdrew a piece of paper from her pocket to double-check the instructions she'd been given. She buzzed in the number on the note to activate the intercom, and before long, she was in the elevator, heading up to Lexie's apartment.
A few moments later, she was back in the parking lot, knocking on the mobile home door. "Let's check in for the day," she told Belie with a grin. Another questionable look and Bella grabbed her apprentice's arm to pull her out of the vehicle. "Come on." They arrived at a door and as Bella knocked and the door opened, a few wiggly puppies greeted them at the door. Belie squealed in surprise before bursting into laughter. After quick introductions ("Belie, Lexie... Lexie, Belie"), Bella bent down to ruffle one of the puppies behind his ear. The puppy had the look of an eyepatch over her right eye. "This is Ramsey," she told Belie. "Mine." Looking at the others, she held her hand out to another puppy until he approached. "And this is Wesley... Yours.... Surprise." The woman remained in her cottage, cooking up some sort of concoction while Bella and Belie did her bidding.
Bella scoffed. "Nope," she said. She'd been more disturbed than anything by the shaman's chanting. She highly doubted that a few foreign words could miraculously cure her in one day. She'd already accepted her demons a while back, and she knew they would be a lifelong struggle. She'd often worried about how her mood swings would affect Belie if they were to occur during her travels. She'd already been looked upon by others as unstable and dangerous--and the sad thing is that they weren't completely wrong. Still, a voice inside her head suddenly whispered volumes of hope. Something she had not felt in ages. She'd forgotten what it was like to have hopes and dreams that she actually considered achievable. Yet here it was, swelling up inside of her rapidity. Could it be that the shamaness had restored something Bella thought was long lost? Perhaps the sickness of the heart and mind, that the shamaness spoke of, went beyond what Bella had initially assumed. Perhaps she was speaking of hope, and not of psychosis or heartbreak... Perhaps... Belie nudged her. "Are you okay?" she asked. "Yeah," Bella replied. "Just thinking." Perhaps there was some truth to Guarani legend. There was no denying that they were in some slightly creepy circumstances. Perhaps more than slightly, but the excitement of it all overpowered the fear. Bella and Belie sat huddled together in a cottage somewhere in the breathtaking Misiones. Bella's mind was still filled with pictures of all the amazing sights they'd seen earlier that day in the Iguazú National Park. There were countless animal sightings, and the scenery... by Kobe it was incredible.
Belie nudged Bella, bringing her back to the here and now while the shamaness hobbled around the hut, prattling on in Guarani. Surprisingly, the woman spoke English. Thank goodness. "I heard these people were once cannibals," Belie whispered nervously. "Shush," Bella responded. The shamaness turned to look at them, and immediately they forced smiles onto their faces. "I heard that," said the old woman. How old was she anyway? 100? Belie apologised nervously. The woman settled down on the handwoven rug where Belie and Bella sat. She lay down a red cloth and several flat, polished stones on the mat. "Give me your hands," she told Bella. Bella hesitated for a moment. "My hands?" "Come come," the woman responded. Bella hesitated for a moment before placing her hands in the woman's. She glanced sideways at Belie, who was biting her lip, before looking at the Shamaness again. "You are in need of healing," she was told. "Healing? Am I sick?" "This is not a sickness of the body," she said. She touched her fingers to Bella's head. "It is of the mind. And of the heart." "Uhm... But..." "Yes, I know you want to learn about the plants. But first, this." Bella's teeth dug into her lower lip. "Okay..." she said at last. "What do I do?" "Nothing," the woman replied. |
