Angelo could hardly believe the dates his calendar was showing him. His sisters had just celebrated their birthdays. I was hard to believe his older sister was 20 now, and his baby sister was thirteen. He looked through the pictures on his laptop and eventually decided on one picture, which he sent to his mum. His message was very simple: Show this to Elia and wish her a happy birthday again! Tell her I miss her being this little, but that I still love her like crazy! He stared at the picture for a while after sending it. Despite his age difference, he loved his baby sister, and he was looking forward to seeing her again when their family would be in London again. Until then, he would just stay in touch with them all.

Angelo was sitting in the family room, staring at what his mum called ‘the family ship’. The notion made Angelo laugh a little. He had loved his gift, and the time he had spent with his family had been fun, but at times he felt a little weird. His mum still treated him as if he were a baby, and his dad didn’t give him any time to do anything on his own. It made him feel embarrassed at times, the way his parents acted. Especially when they were around their family. Like the way his mum and grandmother always seemed to talk about how nice they were growing up, or how cute they were. He didn’t get why they thought he was so cute. There was nothing cute about him! After all he wasn’t a baby any more. At the same time, Angelo felt happy to have a family like his. After all, they had taken him out to sea for the majority of a day for his tenth birthday, just like that. And they allowed him to collect ships, something some kids would probably think is strange. And they were always there for him, every time his arm even as much as hurt a little. So he decided to make his parents something, just for them. He ran to his room, grabbing some of his Lego. He quickly built something, and he placed it next to the ship. Angelo just had to smile, looking at the ship, with the Lego in front of it. He knew it might look a bit stupid, especially to a bigger kid like Emi, but he knew it was the best way he could say thank you. And he knew his parents would like it. Or he hoped so at least. After all, even when he was a big boy, he knew they loved him. And he loved them just as much. Even when they made him feel embarrassed all the time.
Angelo had looked at his mummy while they were at home. Her tummy had got big, and Angelo had wondered why that was happening at first. But when Emi had once caught his gaze, she had told him that was their little sister growing in there.
Angelo made a thoughtful face. He didn't know what a little sister really was, but since his mummy and daddy told him he would be a big brother, his new sister must be smaller than him. He didn't like how his little sister made his mummy sleepy a lot, but mummy had told him she was okay, and she even tried to play with him when she was at home. He liked that. And when his mummy was looking at little baby stuff, she was smiling a lot. Maybe this little sister wouldn't be a bad thing after all. As he and his sister were sitting on the couch, he went to get his book. He looked at Emi and asked: "P'ease, sis, ca' you rea' to me?" His question was answered by a giggle, and he handed Emi the book before going to sit next to her. As she read, he heard again that the little sister would need help, and that he had to look after her and protect her. So Angelo giggled and nodded as Emi said that. As his mummy came home, he smiled at Emi and ran towards mummy. He hugged her leg before looking at her belly and waving at it, saying: "Hi litt'e siste', I'm you' big brothe', I'll pwotect you!" He nodded, running off after to play with his big sister. |
