Bella had almost forgotten how time-consuming it was to care for a newborn. Little Raphael demanded literally all of her attention these days. Compared to the girls, he was a rather clingy baby, wanting to be cuddled and rocked all the time. Luckily, babies had that built in cuteness factor that evolutionary science claimed was a survival method. Bella totally understood. Some nights, Raphael cried so often that Bella wondered if it was possible to actually dislike her own child.
Still, there were those moments that made her heart melt and made her fall in love with the tiny human, over and over again. His soft cooing sounds, his sweet face, his first smile. A lot had happened since Raphael’s birth. Christmas came and went, Nathan’s birthday, the New Year started. It was as though time was on fast-forward, but Bella had yet to get a full night of sleep. She yearned to work with the animals of Ithemba again, but the most she got to do was to visit the enclosures with little Raphael strapped to her chest. Only when he was sleeping soundly. “I thought I’d be better at this the second time around,” she’d joked to Nathan several times. The truth was, that some days she felt totally inexperienced. It came with the territory, she guessed. Just because she’d raised twin girls didn’t mean she was prepared to raise any child, but she was determined to figure out her baby boy. Someday… For now, she took it one day at a time, tending to his needs, enjoying those wonderful moments and surviving those not-so-wonderful moments. In the end of the day, she was still grateful to be Raphael’s mother. She wouldn’t give it up for anything.
