Between her aunt Blair's wedding, her mother's wedding and Rico and Ceci's wedding, Bella was all wedded-out. There was still one left, but holy Kobe was she tired of getting dressed up an putting a smile on her face. To be honest, she was happy for those getting married. She'd gained a few step-siblings, a new uncle, a sister-in-law, a step-father... Yet as happy as the occasions were, they were difficult for her.
Every night before the event, she had to practise smiling in front of the mirror. By now, she'd gotten so good at it, that she couldn't tell her real smile apart from her phony smile. Still, being in the presence of family members made her uneasy. Only Isa and Adam were aware of what she'd been through, and she intended to keep it that way. But was it the right thing to do? Bella sighed. She didn't have time to think about such things. Instead, she smiled as she approached Rico and Ceci to give them farewell hugs and congratulate them once again. They looked so happy, and for that she was truly glad for them.

Bella awoke to the annoying, steady beep of a heart monitor. As she opened her eyes, she saw nothing but bright, fluorescent lights. She sat up abruptly, looking around. How had she made it to the hospital? The last thing she'd remembered was walking to the store to buy some cigarettes. Come to think of it, she hadn't even gotten the chance to pay for the pack.
Everything was still blurry, but one thing she knew for sure: she was getting out of there. She removed the pulse-oxygen reader from her finger, carefully pulled the IV needle out of her arm and pressed her hand against it to staunch the bleeding. As quickly as possible, she found her clothes and got dressed. Before long, she as peeking around the hallway at the nurse's station. The workers all seemed distracted. Perfect. Without further delay, she briskly walked past the counter, took the elevator down to the ground floor, and was out of the hospital before anyone could notice her missing. No one had to now, and she was determined to keep it that way. |
