"Splash challenge," she mumbled, scoffing at the mirror as she fussed over her hair. Her wrist still ached with the slightest of movements, making her wince as she tried to comb through knots upon knots. It was Isa who rescued her in the midst of a long string of expletives.
"You ought to wash your mouth out with some soap," Isa told her. Bella rolled her eyes, but she caught a trace of a smile playing across Isa's lips. It seemed anything she said made people smile these days. She guessed that's what happened when you kept silent for so long. There were still moments when she wanted to bury her words deep inside again, but tonight was not the night. Tonight, she'd attempt to be a normal person. Even if it took turning down a Splash Challenge to get her to go out. "I look bloody awful with this frickin' cast on my entire leg," she whined. "You look great," Isa said dismissively. "I look like crap." Isa sighed. "Bella, you look fine. And isn't this just a skating buddy of yours? He'd probably just be impressed to see you in a dress anyway." "I'm only wearing this stupid dress because nothing else fits over this ridiculous thing on my leg." Now it was Isa's turn to roll her eyes. "Oh come on." Bella kept her lips shut. "Bella, I'm happy you're going out with a friend. It'll be good for you." Bella's lips remained sealed. She wanted to admit she was nervous. When was the last time she'd been in public, apart from visiting the shrink or the hospital? What if she couldn't carry on a normal conversation anymore? What if her leg decided to give in? What if she looked like a total idiot? What if she had a relapse and suddenly became manic again? What if?! "I need a smoke," she muttered. She grabbed her crutches and moved out of her bedroom as fast as her good leg could take her.
