Bella awoke to the annoying, steady beep of a heart monitor. As she opened her eyes, she saw nothing but bright, fluorescent lights. She sat up abruptly, looking around. How had she made it to the hospital? The last thing she'd remembered was walking to the store to buy some cigarettes. Come to think of it, she hadn't even gotten the chance to pay for the pack.
Everything was still blurry, but one thing she knew for sure: she was getting out of there. She removed the pulse-oxygen reader from her finger, carefully pulled the IV needle out of her arm and pressed her hand against it to staunch the bleeding. As quickly as possible, she found her clothes and got dressed. Before long, she as peeking around the hallway at the nurse's station. The workers all seemed distracted. Perfect. Without further delay, she briskly walked past the counter, took the elevator down to the ground floor, and was out of the hospital before anyone could notice her missing. No one had to now, and she was determined to keep it that way.
