It was about time that the van Loon family visited Aubrey. It was a little difficult with school in session, but this was important. Amanda sent an e-mail ahead of time, to Joanne, explaining that she had a family emergency and needed a substitute for this week. Then, after an apologetic farewell to Daphne and Maë, the van Loon’s bags were packed and their tickets were booked.
Perhaps Aubrey would have a miraculous New Year’s Eve recovery, or maybe even a New Year’s Day recovery. Either way, Niels and Amanda felt that their parents and their youngest sister could use their support. Maybe it would even give Teun and Rosa the chance to step away from Aubrey’s bedside for a moment. The arrival in London was always exciting. The kids were talking non-stop about being able to see a few of their aunts and uncles again. They’d see baby Athena, maybe get to visit Hyde Park or the London Eye. Amanda and Niels had explained to them that because of the situation in London, they might not be able to do all of that, but after all, they were kids. “We need to find some time, before we head back to New York, to show the kids some fun,” Niels mentioned to Amanda as they checked into a hotel. Amanda nodded. “Definitely.” She walked towards the window and was soon joined by Emi. Life was funny, and even cruel, sometimes. Their lives were in New York, but somehow their hearts always brought them back to London. Even for the most tragic of events.
