After two days of being sick, she was finally able to sit up without throwing up from the intense pounding in her head. Perfect timing, she thought. Today she was competing in the national dance competition, and she hadn’t practiced for quite a while. Even worse, she hadn’t checked her phone and email for a long time. Surely, she’d missed some important messages. Turning her feverish eyes to the clock on the hotel bed side table, she looked at the time. Only 5:00. With a yawn and a stretch, she got out of bed and immediately began rehearsing her dance. A couple of hours later, there was a knock on her door and Rosa came in, inquiring how she was feeling. Though she was still a littler feverish and sore, not to mention the upset stomach and headache, she said she was fine. Now way she was missing the competition. “Oh and there’s a little package here for you,” said Rosa. She kissed Amanda’s forehead and said “Happy birthday” before handing her a couple of boxes and leaving the room. Sitting on the bed, Amanda looked at the heart-shaped box of chocolates and took the attached envelope to read the card she’d received from Niels. Inside of the other box there was a delicious-looking chocolate cake. Though there was no candle, Amanda closed her eyes and made a silent wish: one more year.
