The days following the burial, Amanda had been constantly sad. There had been times she'd been better, but most of the time, Niels could see the sadness in her eyes. It was true Amanda had never made up to her father, that they'd never come to terms over Niels' presence in Amanda's life. And honestly, he was beginning to understand Roy now Emi was older. He could understand how Roy had wanted to keep his little girl safe, especially from boys.
As Amanda was having one of her good days, back in New York, Niels hugged her from behind. He noticed her momentary startle. Apparently he had awoken her from some thoughts. "Sorry to interrupt, my love," he said, "I just wanted to tell you you've been a trooper these last days, even at the funeral." Admittedly, Amanda had cried quite a few times since the funeral, and the look she gave him was one of a little bit of disbelief, until she realised Niels had meant in public. Niels admired how strong Amanda stayed in public. She had barely cried, and Niels thought that was incredible. He knew the kids had given her a certain strength, but the power she had displayed even amazed Niels. And the fact she had shed some tears in private was not weird. After all she had lost a father. He kissed her cheek and let go of her. "Wait here love, I got something for you..." He noticed Amanda's eyes displaying that questioning sparkle as he turned around and walked out. "What is it?" she asked once he got back, showing Niels where the curiousity of their kids had come from. Niels grinned and handed her the parcel. As she opened it, it showed a picture of her and Roy, at the day of their wedding. It was amazing they'd not had that picture in their house yet, so Niels had it printed. "I thought he deserved a place here... And if we have to remember him, I think we'll want to remember him at his best, when he made the greatest sacrifice a father can make." He kissed Amanda's forehead, giving her hand a little squeeze after.
