Niels frowned all day on Christmas Eve and the day after. They had attended a funeral, a first one for their kids, and it seemed to leave the most of an impression on Emi. Niels knew their elder daughter was smart, possibly too smart for her age, as she had proven when she had been afraid of her little sister dying because of her asthma attack. And Amanda wasn't exactly cheerful either, even though Niels tried to remedy that. However it wasn't until Christmas night that Niels realised how much of an impression it had really left on Emi. As the little one had gotten up and cuddled to them, Niels should have known something wasn't right, but as he tucked her in, she asked him out of the blue to promise her to not die. Niels frowned, caressing her hair gently. "I won't, little princess, don't worry... Your daddy isn't going to leave you... He'll be here, for you and you brother and your sister... And your mummy! I love you all way too much to die on you!" he said. He winked at her, hugging her gently, as good as he could without undoing his tucking in. He looked at her for a while longer, caressing her face while gently whispering: "I know sweetie, yesterday was strange, going to the funeral and everything, but I'm really healthy, and I reaaaaallyyyy love you all too much..." He tickled her gently, making her giggle, even when she kept it down to not wake her brother. Niels gave her a gentle wink, whispering: "Are you sure daddy's going nowhere now?" "Twick or treat!" Angelo yelled as they rang a doorbell. Even when it was a little odd to really go trick or treating in New York, Niels and Amanda had the luck Rico lived in a part of town that had normal houses. Because of that, Emilia, Angelo and now Eliana would have an opportunity to actually enjoy Halloween to the fullest. The streets were decorated, here and there Niels could swear he could even see some pumkins. It all excited little Elia, who was feeling better thanks to her medicines, and she pointed at them, squealing in excitement. And her excitement carried over to Rhea, who was waving excitedly in her mummy's arms.
They had taken this opportunity to spend some more time with Rico and his family, certainly since they had returned from China not that long ago. And the kids certainly seemed to like seeing each other again. They walked close to each other, chatting happily before running to houses. Every time they reached a house, Emi rang the bell, before Angelo and Lucie gave the people their cutest looks, begging them to get some candy. And that approach seemed to work. The families walking up after the kids only made the inhabitants of most homes think they were even more cute, courtesy of the two baby girls being dressed up sweetly. After finishing the round of the neighbourhood, they all retreated to Rico and Ceci's home for a Halloween dinner. They caught up, watching pictures, both of their hosts' trip and pictures of the children in their outfits. They all looked so cute. After going home and putting Emi and Angelo to bed, they gave Elia her medicine. Once the little girl was to bed as well, Niels and Amanda cuddled up on the couch, watching their kids pictures again. The collage Rico had made was beautiful, and Niels whispered to Amanda: "We need to have this printed... Our little ones need to be remembered of days like these when they're older..." He looked at the picture again, sighing. After Niels and Amanda had spent their summer time in Tuscany, it was time to come home again. Reluctantly, they had said goodbye to their relatives there, and the kids went into the stables, sniffling because they didn't really want to go. But Niels and Amanda managed to convince them to come along, promising them they'd come back before too long so the kids could ride again. As they went to the airport, everyone was a little more quiet than they usually would be. Everyone but Elia. She was busy chatting away, looking around and pointing at random clouds and making up names for it. It was adorable, and itmade Amanda giggle. For a moment, it made them forget about Elia's constant coughing. The worst part about the coughs was the fussing Elia did after the coughing. It was heartbreaking, to see the little girl like that, and Niels didn't forget about Amanda wanting to take Elia to a new doctor. As they landed in New York, Niels had immediately grabbed his phone and had made some calls. He eventually found the best pediatrician in town, and he called the office to make an appointment, which he told Amanda about immediately. Amanda seemed to be happy about the fact Niels had done this, and she gave him an appreciative hug. ![]() Days passed after that, and their appointment came closer. Elia seemed to be feeling well, but she still had her coughing fits. They made Niels worried about what really was the matter. He had to ask the doctor once they got to him, he realised, and he told Amanda that if this doctor blamed allergies too, he would insist on visiting yet another pediatrician, if needed one somewhere else. But until the day of the appointment, Niels would just look after the little girl, together with the rest of her family, and make sure little Elia was having a good time. |
