Niels smiled, looking at his family. They all were a bit tired, having spent the day at the park.
Angelo had been all excited, running around, playing with his sisters. Niels thought the highlight of Angelo's afternoon might have been when Emi was dancing. As that happened, Angelo's eyes had lit up, and he had been applauding so happily. Elia in the meanwhile, had been pointing at everything she saw, or at what she thought to see. It had been a funny sight to her family, who were all laughing and giggling about her actions. It was amazing, how incredibly much she had grown over the last few months, from a little girl, born prematurely into a happy little girl, pointing and babbling. But now, their little family was home again, and it was time for Angelo's cake. Emi was smiling, running from the living room to the kitchen and back. She was even more excited than before, dancing and singing as Niels carried Angelo's cake in. Angelo looked at the cake, his jaw dropping in awe. He looked at the cake as if it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. "Is tha' foh meeee???" he asked, barely believing his eyes as his daddy nodded. Once the cake was standing in front of him, his family began to sing, his big sister clapping to the rhythm. Angelo giggled, blowing the candles and closing his eyes to make a wish. He giggled more when his baby sister pointed at the cake, and when he tasted the cake, he felt like he was in heaven. Niels just sat next to Amanda, looking at his children eating cake. "We're blessed with these three," he whispered, "and I still can't believe our little boy is four years already..." Amanda looked at him, nodding, clearly a little touched by the fact he was having his birthday. "I know," she said, "our little man is growing up..." She looked at Angelo, emotional but proud.

Now that Elia had been home for some time, things seemed to ease down. The little girl settled in easily and she was growing dayly, becoming stronger and stronger. Even though Niels and Amanda continued to monitor her closely and keep her in their room at night, the both of them were growing more and more confident in the way everything would turn out.
Niels had been shocked in the hospital, when he had heard the little girl had stopped breathing twice, but since those days, her breathing had been stable. Niels now even grew more brave around her. Like he had put her on the bed once, close to Amanda. All three of them had loved that, and the way Elia had reacted, by cooing and looking at her mummy, had made Niels' heart melt a bit. But Niels knew they still weren't out of all of the danger. Elia still had to go to regular checkups while she was this little, something Niels had hoped to avoid. After all they'd already gone through that with Angelo. But at least Angelo was a blessing when it came to this, for as much as the little man sometimes disliked doctors, he would encourage Elia to keep going when she was older, Niels had faith in that. He walked up to Amanda, who was admiring the kids. Elia was in Angelo's old rocker, and Emi was sitting in front of her, talking to her little sister. Angelo, in the meanwhile, was running around to grab toys and stuffed animals, trying to give them to his little sister. Eventually, little Elia was in the rocker, surrounded by them, which Emi moved away, telling Angelo he had to be more careful with their little sis. Niels grinned as Amanda turned to him, whispering: "I love how they're taking care of Elia! I hope they'll always be like that." Niels nodded, whispering back: "So do I... But I have faith they will... After all, we've raised them properly..." |
