Emi stared at the huge package given to her by Jarrett. He looked at her with expectant eyes while Eli was giving him an annoyed look. Those two seemed always annoyed at each other, but they were cousins. Boys were weird. Emi opened the package and was completely dumfounded, yet curious, by the technology. It seemed… complicated.
“It’s a zombie tracker,” Jarrett explained. “To keep the monsters away.” Emi giggled. There were no such things as monsters but it was a kinda cool gift. She thanked him anyway. Eli’s gift was a really cool, silvery mask and a yummy brownie. Emi would eat it soon, but first she had to finish unwrapping presents. She wore Eli’s mask as she unwrapped the others. It made the boy smile and give Jarrett a look. Was this a competition for who gives the best presents? From others she got cute clothes and toys, a rubik’s cube from Maddie, and brand new ballet shoes from her mummy. It was the best sleepover ever with movies, popcorn, cake, pillow fights and even some games on her Wii. No one wanted to go to sleep, but the grownups told them that they had to sleep. Emi didn’t pout too much because she knew in the morning, she’d get to see her friends again. It was a great day! She didn’t even mind sharing her birthday with Elia, because she was just glad that her little sister was doing well. She could remember how scared everyone was when Elia was born. She was so tiny. Like a little baby doll, and Amanda had vowed to protect her. Just like she wanted to protect Angelo, but at least Angelo was bigger now. Soon Elia would be bigger too. Before Emi went to bed, she peeked into Elia’s bedroom and put one of her old teddy bears in her baby sister’s crib. Blowing her a kiss, she whispered, “Happy birthday, sister. I love sharing this day with you.”
